Gutter Installation and Cleaning in Greater Boston
Gutter installation starts with sizing the run to your roof, not just hanging whatever length was on the truck. Cleaning keeps that system doing its job once it's up.

What a gutter is actually for
A roof without a working gutter dumps runoff straight down the foundation wall. A few inches of rain on an average roof adds up to thousands of gallons, and water pooling against your foundation year after year leads to damp basements and rot. The gutter’s job is simple. Catch the water coming off the roof and carry it to a downspout that moves it away from the house.
Repair versus replacement
Not every sagging or leaking gutter needs to come off the house. Most sags trace back to ice buildup, spaced-out hangers, or debris weight sitting in the trough. Most leaks come from clogs, holes, bad slope, or a seam that has opened up over time. Any of those can usually be fixed without a full replacement.
The harder question is what’s under the gutter. If the fascia board it’s screwed into has gone soft, a new gutter fastened to rotten wood will fail again on its own schedule. Check the fascia before you fasten anything new to it. Seamless aluminum is the standard residential material around here, run and cut on site rather than pieced together from stock lengths. A sound run is worth repairing, but only if the fascia underneath passes a screwdriver test first. Skip that check and you end up paying twice.
Cleaning is not roof washing
Cleaning means clearing the trough and downspouts so water has somewhere to go. It is a separate job from washing algae or moss off the shingles above it. Plan on clearing debris at least twice a year, more often under overhanging trees, with a check after any severe storm.
Gutter guards have a real but limited role. They cut down on the leaf load between cleanings, nothing more. They are sometimes marketed as ice protection, and that is a stretch. Gutters do not cause ice dams. Homes without gutters get them too. But a gutter sitting at that cold eave fills with ice first and often tears loose, splits at the seams, or rots the fascia behind it. A pitched, well-fastened, clean gutter rides out freeze-thaw better than a clogged one, but the actual fix for ice dams is sealing air leaks and improving attic ventilation, not the gutter itself.
What matters on the install side
Three things matter when a gutter goes up. First, pitch. A gutter needs to slope toward its downspouts, or it holds standing water and ice instead of moving either one along. Second, the fascia has to be sound before hangers go into it, for the reason above. Third, the downspout needs to discharge away from the foundation rather than right at the base of the wall. Exactly how far depends on your yard and grading, so we walk the site and pick a discharge point that actually clears your grade and your neighbor’s yard, rather than quoting a number that doesn’t fit your house.
